Austal Begins Building of US Navy’s Subsequent Floating Dry Dock

Austal USA has begun developing the US Navy’s Auxiliary Floating Dock Medium (AFDM) at its facility in Cell, Alabama.

The AFDM is a “Rennie” kind of dry dock that includes steady wing partitions and sectional pontoons.

These capabilities present naval operators with the soundness and displacement to submerge and raise vessels.

Every dock has a lifting capability of 18,000 lengthy tons and a transparent deck working space of round 8,435 sq. meters (91,000 sq. ft).

The AFDM’s detailed design and development contract was awarded to Austal in June 2022. It’s valued at $128 million.

“This dry dock shall be a primary for Austal, however we’re as much as the problem,” Austal USA New Building Vice President Dave Growden said.

“Our proficient shipbuilders are at all times prepared for no matter we require of them whether or not it’s the fourth ship in a multi-ship program or the primary of a brand new design.”

Latest Austal Contracts With US Navy

In Could, the US Navy awarded Austal a $114-million contract to design the service’s subsequent Auxiliary Basic Ocean Surveillance Ship (T-AGOS).

The settlement will quantity to $3.2 billion if the choice for the detailed design and development of as much as seven T-AGOS vessels is exercised.

The AFDM growth comes after the graduation of labor on two further US Navy Navajo-class Towing, Salvage, and Rescue Ships (T-ATS) final week.

Austal acquired the $156-million contract for T-ATS 13 and 14 in July 2022. The settlement for the T-ATS 11 and 12 was awarded in October 2021.
